Clean Air and WaterEarth

We must protect our air by fully funding and enforcing the Clean Air Act Amendments adopted in 1990  that set the stage for protecting the ozone layer, reducing acid rain and toxic pollutants, and improving air quality and visibility.  Emission levels must be reduced to insure healthy communities.  The Act must be revisited to enhance strategies for addressing climate change.  I would be honored to sponsor such legislation in cooperation with a fully staffed and competent U.S.E.P.A. headed by a qualified expert. I would also support efforts to achieve such an administration.

The Clean Water Act is the primary federal law in the United States governing water pollution. Its objective is to restore and maintain the chemical, physical, and biological integrity of the nation’s waters by preventing point and nonpoint pollution sources, providing assistance to publicly owned treatment works for the improvement of wastewater treatment, and maintaining the integrity of wetlands.  I would support full enforcement and funding for the Clean Water Act  similar to my comments for air, and support working with a competent US EPA staff to update the act and improve it to meet new challenges to meet the goal of clean water for all America’s lakes, rivers, streams, oceans, wetlands and drinking water supplies.

Global Warming

Global WarmingGlobal warming is a real and true threat. Changes must be made in energy and consumption uses, as well as in pollution controls.  I support a clean energy agenda that replaces fossil fuels and nuclear power with renewal energy such as solar and wind throughout America.  Begin with eliminating current tax breaks and incentives to develop oil, coal, and natural gas on public lands and coastal waters so that solar and other clean energy sources compete on a level playing field in the economy.  Ban fracking and new liquid natural gas export facilities.  In addition, we can encourage and  incentivize the use of clean energy vehicles, commercial and home building products and industrial practices that reduce pollutants.  Conservation and encouraging the reuse and recycling of everything on a personal, business and governmental level will close the circle.  I will fight for, and vote for, environmental protection policies.

Specific to Florida

Florida ReefIn  Florida, no consideration of environmental issues is complete without mention of the pressing need to restore the Everglades and protect the coral reefs.  We must stop the flow of harmful agricultural nutrients into the Everglades. Current federal plans must be funded and expedited to save the River of Grass.  NOAA efforts to protect coral reefs must combine with land-based efforts to reduce pollution and combat climate change to slow hypo-thermal stress to the reefs.
